L.J. Smith implies Stephenie Meyer ripped off Vampire Diaries

Now this is translated from Spanish, and not by me so I cannot confirm that this is truly the statements made by L.J. Smith. I'll just post the quote and let you decide

According to the newspaper O Globo, writer Lisa J. Smith, author, among other works he created the series The Vampire Diaries, she has requested for Stephenie Meyer to attend a public examination. The basis of the similarity of all the books, according to Smith, is among his books of "The Diary of the Vampire" and "The sect of Vampires," with "Twilight".

Smith Said: "Almost all the characters and major events in Meyer's books can be found in my books." In the postscript that Smith published between 1991 and 1996 and Meyer was between 2005 and 2007. Smith continued, "I challenge the author of" Twilight "to an open debate on the web. I want to see how she explains all the similarities. The row of newspapers have reported that the vampire myth is back, thanks to Meyer and Smith should be grateful.

Here it is if you want to try and translate. My translation in my broken Texas Spanish Spanglish at least confirms the open challenge to debate this on the web

Interesting to me really because I DON'T see the similarities that much

The lead female characters seem very different. Bella is aloof, isolative, quiet, clumsy, plain. Elana is blonde, popular, a cheerleader, a strong group of friends, and very pretty.
There exists a love triangle in both stories, but one involving a teen wolf and an ancient vampire, whereas Vamp Diaries pits two brothers against each other. At least Jacob and Edward are both inherently good, while Damon is incredibly evil.

Other than two teen girls falling in love with vampires, the similarities seem to end there. Bella doesnt' die MULTIPLE times and become like a super strong spirit vampire, queen of the damned like Elena. Bella gets married and chooses one, has a child, Elena doesnt get the same happy ending.

Vampire lore will have similarities. I don't see Anne Rice calling out other Vamp authors because their vampires ALSO drink blood.

Another quote taken from L.J. Smith's blog
But that’s not the end. The New York Times has an article in its arts section that starts with something about how L.J. Smith, upon reading T*******, must have wanted to send an armada of termites to S. M.’s house! Finally, someone has taken up the cause! And it’s a newspaper with such a large circulation. Yes, I’m happy!

  1. Ugh, this is so ridiculous I wish I didn't even read it. This guy should be fucking thankful for SM b/c without her books... no one would give a shit about his. He had a whole decade to get popular and no one gave a crap before then. He owes what he has to her. And then to call her out to an online debate? HAHAHA. SM would never do that, because it's so stupid. She should just ignore this because the guy just wants to ride further along on his coat tails. He better be careful what he goes crying about, because before you know it people won't be watching his lameass show if he goes around bashing twilight and SM.

    1. It's not ridiculous at all. So many scenes, names and such are exactly like The Vampire Diaries. Re-watch the series or read the books keeping this in mind and you will notice. No doubt in my mind SM got so many of her ideas from TVD.

  2. That is absolutely ridiculous. I was planning on reading The Vampire Diaries, but now I'm not so sure. I don't feel like supporting someone who can be that shallow and just downright lame. Ugh!

  4. Go pick up ANY book from L.J. Smith's Nightworld series, Secret Vampire in particular, and then tell me that no-talent hack Stephanie Meyers DIDN'T copy the whole premise of the series. There are only two reasons Twilight is more popular now than L.J. Smith’s novels were after their inception: 1)teenagers have far more buying power than they did in the 90s, and 2) Twilight is so poorly written that a minimal reading comprehension level is required to slog through them in a 24 hour period, making them ideal for modern teens. Full stop.
P.S. - Shannon? L.J. Smith is a woman. Good one.

  6. I notice the similarities between both Twilight and Vampire Diaries and I love both. I also think that Vampires are old legends and anyone should be able to write about them but I think maybe to check the plots don't infringe copy right is a good idea. Truly though, both are great. I will remember to do my homework before I carry on with mine. As one of my characters is called Damon and that was written long before I knew about Vampire Diaries or Twilight.

  7. It's not Spanish, it's Portuguese, from a Brazilian news paper. The first part seems to be translated ok, the second part is not the same, maybe a comment from the translator or another part of the text.

  8. There’s no question that Stephanie completely ripped off LJ and that Twilight was a copyright infringement. LJ should be paid $40 million dollars for this vagrant breach.
